Memories

We feel very grateful to have known Wendy. Growing up, it was a wonderful thing when our family would spend time with Garth and Wendy. We appreciated Wendy’s kindness, calm and great sense of humour.  We also had a strong sense from her of respect and genuine interest that kids don’t necessarily, or perhaps even commonly, feel from the adults they interact with.

We can remember being at Garth and Wendy’s house near Baltimore, and Wendy taking time to set us up to see the fireflies at dusk. She understood how delightful and fun that was going to be for us. We have fond memories of summer visits to Santa Cruz for the Shakespeare. We can remember a trip to Disneyland one Christmas (and being puzzled that the adults wanted to go to Disneyland) and we can even remember back to the house and pool in Tucson.

There must be many other kids of Wendy’s friends and colleagues who feel like we do. Wendy was an exceptional person.

“The Wendy I knew was a wonderful friend and great company, but she was never ridiculous. She didn’t rant (even about our frustrating jobs in Washington DC), she didn’t rave (and I took her to Emma’s Tea Spot!), and even dressed as a spider for Halloween, complete with black stockings for extra legs, she wasn’t the least bit frightening. She laughed a lot, but not at anyone. She was endlessly patient and kind. Wendy had the rare capacity to enjoy life in all its moments, grand and tiny. My moments with Wendy were the tiny ones, but every one of them was lovely, however small.”

“This photo is one of my favourite memories of our beautiful girl. She said to me when the photo was taken that she loved being squashed between her big boys and I could feel her love around me. She was so tiny but her love always felt enormous and I am so glad we told her how much we loved her that visit. She was definitely a very special part of our family and will always be held dearly in our hearts.”
